An increasing number of congenital heart diseases are being diagnosed in the adolescent/adult age group. This is due to patients who had surgery in childhood growing and surviving to adulthood in developed countries. In Sub-Saharan Africa, this trend is mainly due to delayed diagnosis, inadequate cardiac surgical facilities and poor health care funding.
This was a 5-year retrospective review of patients aged 13 years and above diagnosed with congenital heart disease(CHD). Data was extracted using a structured proforma and analysed with the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27.
Twenty-five patients were seen during the period under review. The median age was 17 years and there were more females than male patients. The most common presenting symptom was easy fatiguability. Only 2(8%) patients had a prior intervention in childhood. 22 patients had corrective surgery and there was no in-hospital mortality.
Easy fatiguability and new onset palpitations must not be ignored in this age group. Patients who presented with complications and more complex lesions had increased morbidity.
